How to Celebrate National Pizza Week the FoodtoEat Way

By Rosie O’Regan

For those of you who have been eagerly awaiting the start of 2014’s National Pizza Week, congrats it’s finally here!

If you have no idea what I’m talking about, National Pizza Week is an annual celebration of (in my opinion) one of the greatest foods on earth, taking place during the second week of January. So get excited, cause it’s happening NOW!

Many of you are probably chomping at the bit to share your favorite NYC pizzeria, but here at FoodtoEat we’ve enjoyed slightly different definitions of pizza. These alternatives to the traditional slice are equally delicious and 10x more interesting.

Pizza Steak from Phil’s Steaks

Trade one staple for another–try this pizza-inspired take on an American classic, the Cheesesteak. Start with a standard Phil’s Steak and add your choice of cheese, marinara sauce, wit’ or witout fried onions, and add hot or sweet peppers for an extra kick.

Lahem B’ajeen (Lebanese Pizza) from Toum

Put your New Yorker snobbery aside and give this Lebanese pizza with minced beef, tomato, onions, parsley, and spices. It’s bound to make that regular slice look a little lackluster.

Bruschetta with Aged Cashew Cheese from The Squeeze

Okay, okay so bruschetta is generally a whole different “thing” than pizza…just give this cashew cheese creation topped with roasted red bell peppers and caramelized onions a chance. You’ll be swapping it in for your usual slice in no time.

Big Boy Sicilian Slice from Valducci’s Original Pizza Truck

While Valducci’s is known for its to-die-for classic pies and slices, today is the day to try their Sicilian slice. Take a thick crust base and top it with fresh tomato sauce and mozzarella and you have pizza perfection all in one neat square slice.

Bufala Pizza from Neapolitan Express

If you’re craving a little taste of Italy, check out Neapolitan Express’ Bufala personal pizza laden with tomatoes, mozzarella di bufala, basil, and extra virgin olive oil. The difference from a margherita pizza is in the cheese, so show your adventurous side and end National Pizza Week right!

There you have it–a few of our favorite pizza alternatives if you find yourself already gorged on the classic slice. Buckle in for the delicious ride that is National Pizza Week and hope that you can still fit into your pants by the end of it!
